WHITEWATER RAFTING
Ohiopyle,
Pennsylvania
Located primarily in Fayette
County, Ohiopyle encompasses about 19,052 acres of rugged natural beauty
and serves as the gateway to the Laurel Mountains. The focal point of
the area is the more than 14 miles of the Youghiogheny [yaw-ki-GAY-nee]
River Gorge that passes through the heart of the park. The "Yough" [yawk]
provides some of the best whitewater boating in the Eastern U. S. as
well as spectacular scenery.
With beautiful scenery,
dependable year-round flow, and delightful Class III / IV rapids, the
Yough has it all. Rich in paddling history, the"Lower Yough" was the
birthplace of commercial rafting in the eastern United States (back in
1964) and the training ground for some of the nation's best paddlers.
SAMPLE ITINERARY
Day 1
2:00pm -
7:00pm – Best course of action is to make your way to
Ohiopyle area on Friday night to make the early Saturday morning wake-up
call as bearable as possible. Option to stay at resort or cabins along
the water.
8:00pm -
10:00pm – Once everyone arrives, we will organize a
hearty meal for you and the gang with plenty of time for toasts and
stories
10:30pm -
11:30pm – After dinner, you can relax on the porch or
hit one of the clubs or Sports bars near your lodging. Everything is
within walking distance so nothing to worry about. You may even want to
go exploring along some hiking trails that double as ski trials in the
winter
Day 2
8:00am -
9:00am – Head over to base camp and get briefed on a bit
of rafting safety. Make sure you consume a bunch of water, especially if
dehydrated from night before. Once you are fitted with helmet and life
jacket, you will board the bus for put-in.
10:00am -
4:00pm - After putting in below Ohiopyle Falls, you
immediately face a series of ledges and then a rocky stretch known as
Entrance Rapids without any warm-up. It's a long, tortuous course with
twisted currents. A huge rock near the top (Sugarloaf), stands midriver
to catch broaching boats (drifting sideways). Half of the upsets on the
Loop take place here. After lunch you will hit Railroad (Class
III-IV)-another infamous boat-chewer. Several passages exist over this
steep drop. However, you will notice Turtle Rock in the river, with its
back on the right and its head on the left. With enough water you can
sneak between the neck and the head.
4:00pm -
7:00pm - Settle down for a BBQ dinner at base camp,
where you can check out pictures of the carnage from the days events.
Hang out at base camp bar as long as you wish, eventually making way
back to lodge for a shower and a power nap
7:00pm -
9:00pm – Last night of the celebration, so make it
count, whether that means building a fire and watching sunrise or
closing down the Matterhorn Bar.
Day
3
10:00am –
11:00am – After breakfast, head back home via the scenic
route for your chosen methods of departure after a weekend to remember.
